The summer days are lurking right around the corner and before you know it we will back into a new school year. Now I don’t want to wish it away but I am SUPER EXCITED about ODYSSEY 2012 a Decade of Difference. For ten year Odyssey events have educated over a million people about alternative fuels and advanced technology vehicles. It all started in April of 2002 with the project of a National AFV Day Odyssey to support the AFV industry. In the inaugural year there were 51 sites across the country in 31 states. In the last Odyssey event (2010) there were 131 sites across 43 states and one event in Canada. Also in 2010 the was a new component added to the Odyssey events. It included secondary school for the first time thanks in part to funding from the Advanced Electric Drive Vehicle Education Program. That year there were 25 secondary school sites. This year, the second time that schools have been invited, we hope to have over 50 sites! We have also offered funding in the amount of $250 to the first fifty secondary schools that sign up and meet all requirements.
Odyssey is not just an event but an opportunity to educate the public and students about the importance of alternative fuels. Especially in today’s financial atmosphere people are struggling more than ever and our dependence on foreign oil is growing by the gallon! Alternative fuels and advanced vehicle technologies are the way to free us from oil and lead to a more environmentally sound planet.
If you or someone you know is a teacher or a student in grades 7-12 and would be interested in hosting an event in your school please click here to sign up. Please note: students cannot sign up for the event, it must be a teacher or school leader.

We are now only 163 days away from Odyssey 2012…A Decade of Difference. This being our 10 year anniversary we would like to make Odyssey 2012 the biggest nation-wide celebration conducted to date. Odyssey gives us a chance to educate not only the public at large but more especially the secondary school students. The more they learn the better they can make informed decisions into their adulthood. They will understand the need for alternative fuels and advanced vehicle technologies from a young age and be able to look at the broader picture of Earth as a whole and how to save it.

We have many schools now signed up but we always have room for more! Sign up today and get the ball moving to a healthier and a more sustainable future!

We now have many secondary schools signed up from around the country! We have schools from California to Virginia and Idaho to South Carolina! We also have some in between in Utah, West Virginia, and Tennessee. It’s getting more exciting as we get more signed up! We still have 205 days until Odyssey but seeing it come together is super! We have returning sites and brand new sites that have never participated before. Getting to spread the word about alternative fuels and advanced vehicle technologies to all sites will be a great way to move the position forward. The more students we teach about alternative fuels the more they tell their parents and the more they become engaged in the matter as well. They will become informed citizens and make choices which reflect a movement towards energy efficiency for not only America but Earth as a whole. As we learn more about how easy it is to use alternative fuels and advanced technology, the infrastructure will grow and we will not be dependent on other countries for our energy needs. Every journey begins with 1 step and it’s time to begin moving!

In 2010, funding through the Advanced Electric Drive Vehicle Education Program allowed the National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium to provide Odyssey sites with funding to help offset the cost of hosting an Odyssey event. The funding was available on a first come, first serve basis, in the amount of $1,000 for 50 traditional Odyssey sites and $250 for 25 secondary school sites.

In 2012, funding through the Advanced Electric Drive Vehicle Education Program will once again be available to help fund Odyssey promotional items. Funding will also be awarded through the program in 2012 to 150 Odyssey host sites as follows: 1.) The first 100 organizations/groups/schools that submit an application to host an Odyssey event (that is not specifically for secondary school students) will be eligible to receive $1,000 after their Odyssey event takes place and after the required deliverables are met.2.) The first 50 schools/groups/organizations that submit an application to host an Odyssey event specifically for secondary school students in grades 7 – 12 will be eligible to receive $250 after their Odyssey event takes place and after the required deliverables are met.

The Advanced Electric Drive Vehicle Education Program, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, provides information, educational opportunities, and outreach activities to educate America on next generation vehicles. One aspect of this program focuses on the support of National Alternative Fuel Vehicle (AFV) Day Odyssey, including expanding the event to educate a new generation of consumers at the secondary school level on the subject of advanced electric drive vehicles. To learn more about secondary school involvement in Odyssey, read the 2010 Odyssey Executive Summary.
