Your Garage Door, Named Part by Part, for Somebody Who Has Never Had To Think About It

You pressed the button this morning and something was wrong. Now you are reading about garage doors for the first time in your life, and every page you open assumes you already know what a torsion spring is.
This one does not. By the end you will be able to look at your own garage, name what you are seeing, tell a real warning sign from a harmless one, and do the single test that tells you more than any of it.
Start With the One Idea That Fixes Everything Else
The opener does not lift your garage door.
That sentence is worth sitting with, because almost everybody believes the opposite, and the belief is responsible for an enormous amount of wasted money.
Your door is counterbalanced. Above the opening there is a steel shaft with a tightly wound spring on it, and that spring has been wound to store almost exactly as much energy as the door weighs. Springs pull up, gravity pulls down, and the two very nearly cancel. A correctly set up door floats. You can raise a two hundred pound double door by hand with about as much effort as opening a stiff window.
The opener is a motor of roughly half a horsepower bolted to the ceiling. Its job is to nudge that already floating door along its travel, stop it in the right place, and hold it shut. It is a guide, not a hoist.
Which is why the most common garage door emergency in the world presents as a dead opener. The spring lets go, the counterweight vanishes, and now that little motor is being asked to deadlift the entire door. It hums, it clicks, it strains, maybe it moves the door two inches and gives up. The homeowner concludes the opener has failed and starts shopping for a new one. The opener is fine. It is the healthiest part on the wall.
The Nine Names That Cover Almost Everything
Walk into your garage, leave the door closed, and turn the light on. Here is what you are looking at.
Torsion spring. The wound coil on the horizontal shaft above the opening. This is the counterweight. Some doors have one, most double doors have two. Older or lighter doors sometimes use extension springs instead, stretched along the horizontal tracks at each side, which do the same job a different way.
Drum. At each end of that shaft, a grooved wheel about the size of a large mug. The cable winds onto it.
Cable. Stranded steel, running from the drum down the side of the opening to the bottom corner of the door. As the shaft turns, the cable winds on and the corner lifts. Two of them, one per side.
Bottom bracket. The L shaped steel fitting bolted to the lower corner of the bottom section, where the cable ends. Remember this one. It is the only part on your garage door that is genuinely dangerous, and we will come back to why.
Roller. A small wheel on a stem, several per side, riding inside the track. Steel with an exposed bearing on most builder grade doors, nylon on better ones.
Hinge. Joins each horizontal section to the one above it, and lets the door fold as it goes round the curve of the track. Numbered, and the numbers matter when replacing them.
Track. The steel channel the rollers ride in, vertical at the sides then curving to horizontal along the ceiling.
Photo eyes. Two small housings at floor level either side of the opening, facing each other across the doorway. They watch for anything in the path and reverse the door if the beam breaks.
Emergency release cord. The red cord with the plastic handle hanging from the rail. Pull it and the door disconnects from the opener so you can move it by hand.
That is the whole vocabulary. Nine words, and a quote stops being a foreign language.
The Balance Test, Which You Should Go and Do
This is the most useful thing a homeowner can do to their own garage door, it takes sixty seconds, and it costs nothing.
Start with the door fully closed. That matters, because if the springs are broken, a door released halfway up will come down hard.
Pull the red release cord. You should feel and hear the trolley disconnect from the carriage on the rail.
Now lift the door by hand. Slowly, with both hands, and stop when it is about waist height. Then let go.
A healthy door stays where you left it. It might drift an inch or two. That is fine.
A door that drops back to the floor has springs that no longer hold the weight, either because they have weakened over thousands of cycles or because one has broken. A door that shoots up towards the ceiling is over sprung, which sounds harmless and is not, because it puts strain through the opener and the top section every close.
Either way, you now know something concrete, and you can say it on the phone. Repeat the test at knee height and shoulder height if you want to be thorough. A properly balanced door holds at all three.
When you are done, reconnect by pulling the cord toward the door and running the opener, or on many units simply by running the opener until the carriage clicks back onto the trolley.
Warning Signs That Actually Mean Something
The door will not hold position in the balance test. Covered above. This is the single most reliable indicator that the counterweight needs attention, and it will show up before anything dramatic happens.
A visible gap in the spring coil. Look along the spring above the opening. A broken torsion spring shows a clean gap of an inch or two in the middle of the coil, as though a slice was removed. It is unmistakable once you have seen it. Nothing else on the door looks like that.
Frayed strands on a cable. Look where the cable winds onto the drum, and along its run down the side. A single strand standing proud of its neighbours, flattening, or rust weeping out from between the strands all mean the cable is going. Near the beach this happens earlier than the manuals suggest, because salt corrodes stranded cable from the inside where you cannot see it.
A door that jerks, or slams through the last foot. Smooth travel that suddenly hurries or catches near the floor is a balance or cable problem. A door should close at the same speed all the way down.
A door hanging crooked in the track. One corner high, one low, and it will usually be jammed. That is a cable that has broken or come off its drum. Stop using the door immediately. Every further attempt loads the track sideways and can turn a modest repair into a section replacement.
Beeping from the opener. Since July 2019, California SB-969 has required a battery backup in every residential opener sold or installed in the state, after wildfire evacuations left people trapped behind powerless garage doors. That battery is a consumable, and a periodic beep is usually it asking to be replaced rather than the unit failing.
Warning Signs That Do Not Matter Much
A dent in the flat of a panel. Ugly, and mechanically irrelevant. A dent in the middle of a section changes nothing about how the door runs. What does matter is a bend or twist at the ends where the hinges and rollers mount, because that pulls the door out of square.
Ordinary rumble and squeak. A garage door is a large sheet of steel rolling on metal wheels inside a metal channel above your head. It is going to make noise. Worn rollers get louder gradually, and swapping them for nylon is worth doing, but the noise itself is wear, not danger. Judge by pattern rather than volume. A gradual increase over years is normal. A new noise that arrived this week is worth a look.
Peeling paint, faded finish, surface rust on the skin. Cosmetic. Coastal air is hard on paint. It has no bearing on the mechanism.
The door reversing on close with the opener light blinking. Annoying, and almost never serious. The photo eyes have lost sight of each other. Wipe both lenses, check nothing is parked in the beam, and square the brackets until both indicator lights sit steady rather than flashing. Sun glare straight into the receiving eye at a particular hour of the afternoon does this too, and people chase it for weeks before noticing it only happens at four o’clock.
The One Part To Leave Alone
Rollers, seals, photo eye alignment and even hinges are reasonable things for a confident homeowner to touch.
The bottom bracket is not, and this is the one point on which we are inflexible.
That bracket holds the end of the lift cable. Whenever the door is down, the springs are pulling on that cable at full tension, and all of it is landing on those two bolts. Undo them with the springs wound and the stored energy of the counterweight releases into a piece of steel that is in your hand at the time. This is where the serious injuries in this trade happen, and they are not near misses.
The same caution applies to winding bars and torsion springs generally. There is no clever technique that makes it safe with the wrong tools.
What To Say When You Call
You do not need to diagnose anything. Describe the behaviour, because the behaviour names the part.
“It hums but nothing moves.” Probably a spring. “It goes up crooked and sticks.” Probably a cable. “It starts down then runs back up and the light flashes.” Photo eyes. “The motor spins but the door sits still.” Usually a stripped drive gear inside the opener, which is a gear kit rather than a new unit. “It will not hold at waist height in the balance test.” The counterweight needs setting or replacing.
That is the whole point of learning the nine names. Not so you can fix the door, but so nobody can sell you a part you do not need.
